Team launched to promote Korean food

May 4'09 - Monday

A pan-government committee to promote Korean food was launched yesterday as part of Korea's effort to enhance the country's cultural recognition around the world.

The team joined by 36 food experts including ministers, scholars, food company CEOs and business leaders held a launching ceremony at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry building in Seoul.

Agriculture Minister Chang Tae-pyong, Culture Minister Yu In-chon and Yang Il-seon, Yonsei University professor for food and nutrition, will be co-heading the committee.

Top Korean star Bae Yong-joon, who also runs a Korean restaurant in Japan, as well as Huh Young-man, a celebrated comic strip artist of "Le Grand Chef" (Sikgaek), and Han Bok-ryeo, the president of the Institute of Korean Royal Cuisine, will also participate in the team.

The Lee Myung-bak administration adopted a long-term vision of globalizing Korean cuisine late last year, as it embraced the food industry as one of the country's new growth engines.

The team will gather every half year and review necessary laws and systems to support the promotion of Korean dishes abroad, and check the progress made by each organization, the Culture Ministry said.

Under the team will be two advisory departments, one on developing infrastructure and R&D, and the other on funds, consulting, public relations and exports.

Headquarters will each be set up at the Agriculture and Food Ministry and Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation to take care of the details of the government's plans.

First Lady Kim Yoon-ok, who is an honorary chairman of the "globalizing Korean food" project, attended the ceremony and said, "For the globalization of Korean food, the government and the private sector must gather forces. In that sense, the launch of this team is extremely significant."

Each participating ministry also released their plans for the promotion at the ceremony.

TheMinistry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, which spearheads the initiative, said it will first focus on promoting bibimbab (rice mixed in red chili paste and vegetables), tteokbokgi (broiled dish of sliced rice cake in seasoned chili sauce), kimchi and traditional liquor this year.

Last month, the ministry announced its goal to put Korean food within the world's top five cuisines by 2017, such as by expanding the number of overseas Korean restaurant brands to 40,000. Currently about 1,400 Korean restaurants exist in the United States, 1,700 in Japan, 2,500 in China and 170 in Europe.

By 2012, the committee also aims to raise the total of agricultural products and food exports to $10 billion from 2008's $4.4 billion, and to boost exports of food materials by $3.5 billion from this year's estimated $90 million.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism also released its plan to develop tourism packages related to Korean food, and promote the dishes through its overseas Korean cultural centers.

The Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministry will be supporting the initiative through various major international events and embassies and legations abroad.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy said it will support companies exporting Korean food items and allowing the use of Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency's logistics center as a center for Korean food and ingredients.

Now Safeguarding Copyright Is in Korea's Interest Too

U.S. President Barack Obama created a sensation during his recent visit to London when he presented Queen Elizabeth with an iPod MP3 player. Everything was fine until people found out that the iPod contained around 40 songs, including "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." Some people were saying even if the songs had been purchased and paid for, only the person who bought them has the right to listen to them, but does not have the right to give them to another person if U.S. copyright laws are strictly applied. That could carry a penalty of up to US$6 million or $150,000 per song.

The U.S. created copyright protection laws in 1790, just 14 years after it was founded. The founding fathers included in the country's federal law the concept of protecting intellectual creations as an individual's property at about the same time they established the U.S. Constitution. The first U.S. official charged with leading the country’s patent office was Thomas Jefferson, who was secretary of state at the time and would later become the third president.

The U.S. is particularly protective of its copyright for more practical reasons than history alone. In 2007, Samsung Electronics' brand value was worth $12 billion. The brand value of Walt Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" alone was worth $17 billion. From the standpoint of a knowledge-intensive country like the U.S., copyright protection is a significant part of safeguarding the national interest. Each year since 1989, the U.S. announced a watchlist of intellectual priority rights violators. Depending on a country being classified as part of the "priority watchlist" or "watchlist," Washington levies retaliatory tariffs on imports from the country.

Last week, the U.S. Trade Representative removed Korea from the blacklist for the first time in 20 years. "Korea is being removed from the watchlist in recognition of the significant improvements it has made during the past year, and the Korean government's policy direction of continuing to place a priority on improving its IPR regime," the USTR said. Among 77 countries, 46 are on America's blacklist. China and Russia made it again on the priority watchlist.

Before it won its independence, even the U.S. pirated intellectual property from England, France and other European countries. And the U.S. demands on less developed countries to pay for using its copyrights is being criticized as an attempt to keep them from catching up. But we live in an age when underwear bearing the image of Bae Yong-joon is being illegally marketed in Japan, while fake Korean mobile phones are being sold across China. We are no longer just the perpetrators of copyright infringement but victims as well. To support our content industry, we need to reach a social agreement to pay for the use of the intellectual effort of others.

Let's get Physically Fit

April 30, 2009

One of my last routine daily is going to the Gym, doing some workouts, aero and dancing, at least for 2 and half hours, from 6:00 - 8:30 PM, Mondays through Fridays, the least 3x a week. If ever I can't do the workouts the next early morning , around 4am, I do the walking inside the village for 1 hour, everybody still a slept. It's been a year and a half now that I've been doing this.

Before I'm not used to do this but when my body comes heavy, I'm so worried that I might get some illness due of heavy weight and worried too that I can't wear my desired dress anymore.I felt so awful (ugly). I must really take care of my health because I'm not alone, there's my children who depend on me alone, if something happens to me because I'm so careless of my health, my children well be left alone.

Now I can still eat a lot. It's no problem anymore because I can burn the calories every time I went to workout. Yes we can still eat as much as we can, but commit your self in exercising. Exercising is not just loosing weight but it makes your body physically fit and gives you more energy and comes more active and stronger than before. They said when you do exercising it can shave 10 to 12 years off your age.... hmmmm...I like it, ha ha ha...

Leny with Happy Hearts Club...

April 29, 2009

May, the month which you can hear there's a lots of town celebrating their fiestas. Fiestas - an annually held to commemorate the foundation of a town, city, or province or to honor it's patron saints. It's a celebration in which they show case how religion, culture and tradition are woven in the fiber of our existence. 9 days or one week before the actual date of fiesta, every night the concerned people are organizing some shows, plays ,games and even contest...

Last night, the barrio near to us is celebrating their fiesta and they organized a look a like contest ( actors look a like) for youngsters. (oh they we're all cute, there's even a Kim Hyun Joong look a like, but I behave my self, they might sue me of Child abuse, he he he he).

And as part of an entertainment they requested our group to participate and perform a dance number. (
I'm a member of BHW or Bustos Health Workers and HHC or Happy Hearts Club). Our group is always been requested every time there's a fiestas or other occasions in Municipal Hall or even B-days or Weddings of some higher govt officials.

That night we dance two times and somebody took us a shots but the photos on stage we're so far and not good, because of the lightning effect , its so dark.
Here take a look....

The photos on stage are not good and clear... So they just decided to take
some poses a little bit far from the crowd in front of Sta. Monica Chapel.

Hey, it's me, seems so happy and jolly with the crowd and friends,
but deep inside full of sadness and loneliness.

Even if I changed my shoes to my Happy Feet Clogs it seems that I'm still the tallest of this group tonight though I'm just 5'5 inches tall.

BYJ... I'm Sorry

April 27, 2009

Sorry

Sorry for loving you...
It all began when I first saw you

The expressive eyes
The priceless killer smile
The eloquent voice that have sensual volumes
And those sturdy muscles

Everything that can be seen in you is perfect
But I know you're more beautiful inside your heart
...it's proven and
that makes me more fallin' with you.....

I hate the feelings,
coz I know it's going to no where
It's one sided attraction that detrimented
my emotional well being
But i can't help falling with you
And that's the hardest thing that
I've ever done......

Sorry for loving you
I'm trying to be with friends and other company
But behind my smiles still
it's you that I'm thinking of
There are nights when I can't help but cry
What can I do, I'm so sad and
just being honest
So sorry.... really really sorry.....

Think About Environment
20 April 2009

by: Manager Yang Geun Hwan
Japanese to English: tomato99
(Thanks to Mngr. Hwan and Tomato )

Greetings, dear family.

This is Yang Geun Hwan.

It has been a while.
^^Korea is getting much warmer these days and cherry trees are in full bloom.
How about Japan?
It may be a good idea to go out to see cherry blossoms with your friends
over the weekend.

Other day, including Bae Yong Joon and other BOF artists Choi Gang Hee,
Lee Bo Young, Park Ye Jin, E Ji Ah, Bong Tae Gyu, Kim Jung Wook,
Hong Soo Hyun, Kim Heung Soo, You Seol A, Yoo Joo Hee, Kang Yo Hwan,
Lee Se Na, and Ryu Sang Wook happily joined the shooting
to create a photo book to protect environment.

All the profit will be donated to environmental organization,
and it will be used for environment protection activities.

Unfortunately, two artists could not join because of their schedule,
but it was heart warming to see everyone encouraging each other
and enjoying the shooting.

Especially, Bae Yong Joon did an interview and seriously talked about
environment and his ideas regarding the issue.

This photo book will be on sale from 20th of this month,
I would be pleased to see everyone’s concern for it.

How about thinking about environment for one day today?

Lee Ji Ah - "Let's grow more trees on earth"

Hong Soo Hyun - calling everyone to save electricity by turning
off the lights when it's not needed.

Cosmo ED met BYJ

My gratitude to this people....

[Cosmopolitan] I met Mr. BYJ. (From the editor..)

From the editor

I met Mr. BYJ. Although I had met numerous flutterings(Joanne: People who make your heart flutter) including actors, musicians, etc, because I was a former feature reporter, I did not somehow have any association with him. On an occasion of visiting him as the editor-in-chief to deliver congratulation and thought of thanks to him, who became our cover model, I expected his 'signature smile' and 'some courteous words of greetings'.
However, he was very much different.
"Ah, (I heard) you became a new editor-in-chief several months ago, didn't you? Congratulations." (Oh my goodness, How did (he know) that!)
"I am glad to participate in such a good project as this." (He is good mannered too!)
"No matter what they are, there has to be story to get result. Culture, history and campaign like this too. The agony is over how shall we do to be able to show (people) so that they would be convinced with more ease. I think that we actors can do such roles." ((He has) even logic and persuasive power!)

Having interest in people he meets and attitude of having significance and sense of pride in works he had chosen, I thought that (he was) the professional after all, the best professional for that matter. According to an editor who proceeded with (shooting for the pictorial), he hasn't had any single careless expression, appearance in his outfits, and conversation, during 4 hours while shooting and interview proceeded. With such a passionate participation by him, the Cosmopolitan obtained the one of the best male cover in our history. Also the proud campaign pictorial containing messages on environment. For the best, there clearly is reason for it. I surely want to say this, although it sounds superfluous.

BYJ, A Considerate Person

BYJ, extraordinary consideration of taking care of pocket money for lowerest ranked manager in company

[Sports World]4/23/09

'Successful people have something different no matter what it is'

It was revealed that BYJ, an entrepreneur as well as an actor, accomplished his current success with careful personality of taking care of the lowest ranks in his company.

Manager is the one of the poorest paid jobs in the society. When listening to stories from people in the entertainment businesses, (managers) start receiving poorer salaries than temporary employees which are becoming a social issue lately. However, they would stand those sufferings because they heard of myths of their seniors who raised stars. They bear the pain with one thought that they will become like seniors who accomplished success myth rising up from the bottom. However, the situation is that making stars is more difficult than getting stars (in sky). Even though numerous young people enter path of manager, most of them give up being unable to overcome poor pay and tremendous schedule.

Because BYJ is aware of such situation, he encouraged newbies who began managing job in BOF founded by himself as he took care of separate spending money every month. A person in entertainment business, who had begun manager career in the BOF recalls that time saying, "At that time the salary was very much poor," and "I was very much disappointed after getting my first pay, but Mr. BYJ took care of pocket money separately on next day. I was really too thankful to an extent that I was not able to say anything." Such consideration gave pride to managers in his agency, and that grew the BOF as big tree in Korean entertainment business.

Continuing on, he also say a word about rumor surrounding BYJ. "As Mr. BYJ's personality is free & easy and manly, he does a lot of playful things to people around him. I think people misunderstand him at the sight of those," and "As people ask me about Mr. BYJ and my heart is really wanting to record those and play for them."

By the way, BYJ recently set out to social service including taking pictorials for environmental protection along with actors in his agency, and donating that profit to Korean Committee of UNEP, an environmental (protection) organization.

Leny's BYJ Necklace

April 23, 2009

Hi friends, today I'll show to you some of my accessories.
I designed it myself and made to order this to the silversmith or goldsmith (what ever) just last month... now I'm wearing it. Others know that BYJ means Bae Yong Joon but to the others that don't know about BYJ and ask me why BYJ , I'll just say that I'm still B -Beautiful, Y-Young (eeerr... at heart I mean) and J - as Jolly. ( ha ha ha ha .. I'm really naughty, huh)
Here, take a look.... hope you like it too.

About the JL-- It's one year old now. JL means Joon and Leny, ha ha ha ha. Oh really crazy, crazy me. Well letter J really means a lot to me. Coincidence or not , did you know that the names of all important persons, that I used to love starts with letter J. My first love--Jojie, the 2nd that I cried for 7 years - Jaime, and the father of my 3 kids was a Japanese and now there's Joon san-BYJ. May be I'm fated to love a person with a name starts with letter J.

Hmmnn....How do I look...
