Yonsama Craze Goes on Despite H1N1 Flu and Financial Crisis.

Actor Bae Yong-joon's clout has gone beyond simply drawing a bigger number of tourists to Korea. The super star played a significant role in achieving a surplus in tourism balance of payments.

Ever since Bae was appointed a promotional ambassador for 2010-2012 Visit Korea Years, he has made an outstanding impact on bringing in over 7.8 million tourists to the nation in 2009. "Our initial target was 7.5 million and it was easily surpassed.

The release of Bae's book "The Journey in Search of Beauty of Korea" diversified the interests of foreign tourists previously centered on Seoul and its vicinity, further to other remote regions of the country, thereby contributing to invigorating regional tourism", said a member of the Visit Korea Year Committee.

The committee analyzed that such impressive outcome is clearly exceptional, considering the global tourism industry reversing the upward trend to post a negative growth for the first time in 6 years after the industry was hit hard by the 2003 outbreak of SARS, as the H1N1 influenza and the financial crisis swept across the world.

While other countries are struggling amid sluggish tourism demand, Korea saw a 15% year-on-year rise in the inbound tourism traffic and the tourism balance of payments returned to a surplus in 9 years since 2000.

As of September 2009, the surplus stood at 320 million dollars and it is forecast to further widen by the end of December. The rising trend was also witnessed in the number of incoming tourists which exceeded the annual 7 million mark for the first time in history.

External factors including strong yen amid fluctuating foreign exchange rates were critical in achieving such successful results.

To break the data down by country, the majority of inbound tourists were from Japan with 4 out of ten being Japanese, followed by China and the U.S. Winter Sonata well captured the charm of Korean culture, prompting a boom in visit to Korea.

In fact, the promotional poster titled "Old Palaces of Korea" featuring Bae Yong-joon recorded a 70% attention rate in February last year, according to a survey by Yomiuri Shimbun, showing how influential Bae is in Japan.

Bae's management agency BOF said, "With his appearance in Winter Sonata, Bae Yong-joon generated more than 4 trillion won back in 2005 in economic effects in both Korea and Japan according to a survey.

We believe Bae played a considerable role in attracting 7.8 million foreign tourists last year after he was appointed a promotional ambassador for Korea in October 2008".

Bae got actively involved in promoting Korea as a tourist destination through the print media and TV advertising during 2009.

He also joined the "Smile Campaign" organized by the Visit Korea Year Committee to encourage Koreans to develop a kinder attitude toward foreign tourists.

Most of all, he certainly lived up to his title as a promotional ambassador for Korea when he held a special event at the Tokyo Dome where 45,000 Japanese fans flocked together in celebration of the publication of his book The Journey in Search of Beauty of Korea which is considered an excellent guide to Korean culture.

Major Projects Of VKC

A repost of BYJ related news from Korea IT Times.

Four Major Projects Being Pushed to Attract
10 Million Foreign Tourists

By: Lee Kyung-min
Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Shin Dong-bin, chairman of the VKC

The Visit Korea Year Committee (VKC) has been making a strong push for four major projects in 2010 to attract 10 million tourists a year, a top official of the committee said. "On the occasion of the 2010-2012 Visit Korea Year, the committee is exerting all-out efforts to herald the brand of South Korea to foreign countries and improve quality of the nation's tourism industry," Shin Dong-bin the chairman of the VKC, said.

In an interview with Korea IT Times, Shin said, "By doing so, we aim to attract more than 10 million foreign tourists every year, attain over US$13 billion in tourism revenue, and secure No. 21 position in terms of the global tourism competitiveness."

Related to this, the committee is actively pushing for four major projects this year – differentiated overseas marketing by market, affluent incentives for foreign tourists when they visit Korea, special events offering something to see and enjoy. There is also a campaign to improve greeting services for foreign tourists, which enables them to feel welcomed when they arrive in Korea.

Special Tourism Sales Promotion Team

"As an initial step, we will dispatch a special tourism sales promotion team to China and Japan to attract tourists from neighboring countries. We will also stage active PR marketing by holding regular explanatory meetings to introduce Korea's tourism resources to foreigners at overseas offices of Korea Tourism Organization," stated the VKC chairman.

In particular, he said, “The committee will engage in active promotion activity to help foreign tourists attend such global events to be held in South Korea such as the World Design Capital Seoul 2010, the World Championships in Athletics Daegu 2011 and International Exposition Yeosu Korea 2012.”

Shin expressed, "Along with this, the committee will implement a program to decentralize foreign tourists centering on Seoul to provincial regions and attract more foreign tourists by offering incentives to shopping centers and lodging facilities." To let foreign tourists see the attractive appearances of provincial regions in the country, VKC has decided to hold the 2010 Hallyu Festival in Gyeongju, the World Food Tourism Festival in Jeonju, and Busan’s Fireworks Festival.

Shin stated, “For development of high-quality tourism products linked with the festivals, the committee is maintaining close tie-ups with relevant provincial governments.” He went on to say, "In addition, it will stage the welcoming service campaign for foreign tourists with the start of the inauguration of the Smile Supporters' group comprising college students."

Korea's Tourism Resources

For a successful Visit Korea Year, the committee plans to actively push for four major tourism areas such as medical services, meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE), ecology and performance – in which South Korea has strong competitiveness, Shin proclaimed.

"We can develop truly high-valued tourism products by promoting and spreading 'hallyu (the Korean wave),' image. For instance, Korean culture experience and products developed by hallyu's star Bae Yong-joon, that featured traveling to the most beautiful places in the country, were sold out even if the price was relatively high at KRW140,000-400,000," stated the VKC chairman.

When asked about the current situation of Korean culture's globalization and the brand value of South Korea. Shin said, "Korean culture's globalization now stands on a toddler stage. South Korea also ranks 42 in global tourism competitiveness, much lower than its neighboring countries. By publicizing the brand of South Korea to foreign tourists and promoting Korea's tourism image during the Visit Korea Year, we aim to jack up the nation's ranking of tourism competitiveness to 20 in the world."

Noting that major foreign countries are striving to attract more foreign tourists as a means of promoting their state image and bolster state competitiveness. Shin reinforced that South Korea is also necessary to increase the number of inbound foreign tourists in order to reduce deficits in the country's tourism balance and strengthen competitive power of the domestic tourism industry.

In line with this, Korea declared 2010-2012 as the Visit Korea Year at the Cabinet meeting to strengthen competitiveness of the domestic tourism industry, presided over by President Lee Myung-bak, on March 28, 2008.

"During the period, we will make best efforts to promote the image of South Korea to the world and implement a variety of short-term and long-term projects to attract more foreign tourists. In particular, we are seeking private companies' active participation in the campaign to lure more foreign tourists this year," said the chairman.

As an initial event for the Visit Korea Year 2010, the committee plans to hold an event welcoming foreign tourists. Under the project, VKC will present a bouquet of flowers to first foreign visitors at Incheon International Airport, Gimpo International Airport and Jeju International Airport.

Along with this, the committee will operate PR booths for foreign tourists at major tourist spots across the country, including Haeundae in Busan, Homigot in Pohang and Jeongdongjin in Gangnung, Shin concluded.Shin Dong-bin, chairman of the VKC.

Winter Sonata Anime's Ending Scene to Be Live-Action

Repost from: Anime News Network
posted on 2010-01-29 17:25 EST

Original stars to film new sequence
that was not in original Korean TV drama

The Nikkan Sports newspaper is reporting on Saturday that the ending scene for the ongoing Winter Sonata anime television series will be filmed in live-action. Yong Joon Bae and Ji Woo Choi, the stars of the 2002 live-action Korean television drama that inspired the anime, will appear in the new live-action footage when it runs on April 24. The new ending in the 26th episode will cover a part of the story that was not in original Korean drama.

Both the original drama and the 26-episode anime follow a girl named Yu Jin Jung (Choi) and her male classmate Joon Sang Kang (Bae) as tragedy and angst befalls them and those around them in the years between high school and young adulthood. The 2004 Japanese broadcast of the drama triggered the ongoing "Korean wave" of pop culture in Japan and turned Bae into a superstar among Japanese female viewers. The Japanese publisher Ohzora Publishing Co. eventually imported and translated the drama's manhwa adaptation under the title Winter Love Song.

Bae had already agree to reprise his role for the anime's voice cast, as part of the 2007-2008 deal that gave his Key East company's production credit for the anime. Choi agreed to join the voice cast shortly thereafter.

Global campaign for "Korea Inspiring" of KTO

Jan. 22, 2010

Korea Tourism Organization | Korea Inspiring | Global

by Benjamin Li, Media Asia/ 22-Jan-10, 11:39

A year after Cheil Worldwide scooped the creative and media business for Korea Tourism Organization (KTO), a global campaign is set to launch in mid-March under the theme ‘Korea inspiring’.

Cheil won the creative and media business last March 2009. Joe McDonagh, executive worldwide creative director at Cheil, explained that KTO's image has been fragmented under the tagline ‘Korea sparkling’. He added that one of the biggest challenges is to integrate the essence of the Korean culture and deliver them in a unified format.

McDonagh said: “The message before was disconnected. Print ads with individual messages. Some worked and some didn’t. We need to find a focus this time and connect with people in a deeper level.”

The global campaign involves three television commercials that have been adapted for each region: Asia, Japan, the US and Europe. Cheil has identified three distinct connections within the Korean culture. 'Qi' being the spiritual bond with nature; ‘Cheong’ as the heart-to-heart connection between people; and ‘Heong’ which refers to the collective energy and passion of the Korean philosophy.

“We have no significant landmark like the Eiffel Tower or Times Square. It is the people that make us stand out. That’s the magic that you never let go of,” McDonagh added.

The creative concept for the ad that airs in Asia is focused on music, fashion and energy. For Japan ithe focus is on hospitality and the elements in nature. It is also the only ad version that features Korean celebrity Bae Yong-joon, who played a key part in the ‘Korean wave’ that swept across Asia in 2002. The American version of the ad incorporates the rich culture of Korea and its landscapes.

The campaign will kick off with the TV ads and with print and online promotions running at a later stage.

BYJ's Philosophy

A translations of Bae Fan's blog about the philosophy of BYJ through discovering "the Beauty of Korea"
Accounts of BYJ from Hanbok teacher Lee Hyo Jae (LHJ)

Teacher Lee did not know Michael Jackson (MJ).
One day, while having a meal in the store, she saw the report on MJ’s passing. From then on, she said she started liking MJ.

Later she saw YJ, YJ revealed his sadness while mentioning the passing of MJ.
Followed by
YJ : MJ and Teacher Lee are the same age. Born on the same day (not sure if he is referring to his birthday or the teacher’s) (note: MJ ‘s birthday : August 29 1958)
LHJ: What’s wrong?
YJ: Nothing, just a tongue in cheek comment.

Later, teacher Lee realized perhaps what YJ meant was that whenever MJ comes to mind, so should YJ as well.

One day they were making Kimchi
Teacher Lee wrote on the blackboard the word Kimchi

At that moment, YJ wrote at the side :
Master Lee Hyo Jae, Disciple Bae Yong Joon.
From then on teacher Lee started addressing BYJ as “disciple”.

Looking at YJ’s philosophy through the book of Beauty of Korea

I have finally finished reading the Beauty of Korea which I bought last September. BYJ’s thinking is quite philosophical. One can see that he also wishes to do many things. There are a few interesting areas I was quite drawn to. Here “I” refers to BYJ

Making Ceramics

The ceramics teacher said among 800 items, generally there are only 50 items that can be classified as satisfactory.

The teacher asked me to select one out of the 48 glazed fired crane ceramics from the kiln, as a gift for myself. At the same time testing my eyesight.

I carefully checked one after another. I narrowed it down to 6 items. Eventually I had chosen 2 items, then I picked my favorite one. I placed the ceramic in front of the teacher with two shivering hands.

The teacher said “ This ceramic is really second to none”. After hearing this, I heaved a huge sigh of relief.

Kyong Ju

After seeing the ancient capital Kyongju, while I was lost in my thoughts, a colleague who likes to snack wanted to try the traditional Kyongju steam bun. He was pestering me saying that “there is no other branch elsewhere in the country, this is the only place that sells them”. So we then went into the shop and watched the entire process.

The newly made Kyongju steam bun is just delicious. The filling inside made us very happy while eating it. A group of people were saying how this is the first time for them to taste these steamed buns, but at the same time they were wrapping the sample buns (from the counter)which were for the visitors to try out with serviettes into their pocket. Originally I was going to stop their indiscretions, but after seeing their smiling faces, I dispelled the thought. Afterwards I bought a box of steamed buns in order to express my apologies to the owner.

(Leny) Wondering what steam buns look like. Is it like the white Chinese steam bun that we called here "Siopao" or is it the brownies one that I've seen in a certain drama.
