Artisans Words About BYJ

Sept. 22, 2009

BYJ seen by the artisans of Cultural heritages and Arts

[DongA Ilbo]

He was awful.. practiced lacquer with bare hands for a week.
He was nice.. didn’t want to give a person any trouble.. so brought his own lunch.

Bae Yong Joon went to Iwate Lacquer Museum located in Iwate providence in Japan to meet the lacquer artisan and curator, Jeon Yong Bok on the 26th of February. He stayed there with his staff for a week and learned lacquer painting. He worked early every morning and finished until 1 or 2 am the following day.

The Curator Jeon worried about lacquer poison and told him to wear gloves. Bae Yong Joon replied like this: “I can’t feel the full texture with the gloves. I didn’t even come here to wear gloves but to learn lacquer painting.” The Curator Jeon remembered saying, “Bae Yong Joon brought a sleeping bag, slept and ate with everyone in the quarter. The weather was so cold and I could see his rosy cheek.”

‘Yongsama’ Bae Yong Joon wrote a travel photo essay, ‘Traveling to discover the beauty of Korea’, for the past year will be released on the 23th. He was hospitalized for septicemia for four days, discharged on the 21st, and will attend to celebrate the publication of his book at the National Museum of Korea on the 22nd. His immune system was weakened from stress and lost about 10kg while writing the book. He interviewed 12 artisans of the cultural heritage and arts. This company heard from 9 of them ‘Bae Yong Joon was seen by artisans’.

“So surprised about his persistence”

Bae Yong Joon brewed the traditional wine himself at the Director Park Rok Dam’s office who is the researcher of the traditional wine. The wine he made is ‘Dong Jeong Choon’ (it was brewed from the fermented polished rice and yeast without water.) and the Director Park said that it is the most difficult and detailed procedure to brew. His hands were skinned and bleed while he was mixing the materials. The brewing started at 9 am and finished at 8 pm. Director Park said, “He really wanted to learn, not shallowness. I was so surprised.”

He went to meet the ceramist Cheon Han Bong and worked on the spinning wheel for 3 hours without stopping.

He worked until 10 pm at the tea field in Choon Cheon city, Gang Won Do which was operated by East Asia Tea Lab Director Park Dong Choon. He slept at the Choon Cheon downtown and came back the next day at dawn because there were no lodges nearby. He said, “I don’t want to give you any trouble.” and brought lunches made with Korean traditional dishes.

He learned how to make kimchee until 10 pm from the Korean Traditional Dress Designer Lee Hyojae. Lee said, “Mr. Bae is satisfied only when he does everything himself.”

He was asked to give an autograph after lunch when he went to see Hong Ssang Li of Green Plum Farm in Gwangyang in Jeongnam in early June, and he said, “I want to give autographs to the ones who had difficulty preparing lunch and then I’ll give autographs to you.”

The photo travel essay, ‘Traveling to discover the beauty of Korea.’ was written in a year, and will be released tomorrow.

“I would like to make the Environment-friendly cultural heritage town.”

Why did he go through such hardships to write a book? He said to the Architecture and Professor of Seonggyungwan University Lee Sang Hae, “I made money as an actor. I’m writing a book to find the way to return the money to society. There are serious problems in the cities and general environmental aspects, and countries are fallen behind. I wish to make the town where the Korean cultural heritage will remain alive and can be maintained continuously.”

He showed his interests to build the Environment-friendly cultural heritage town, not only to publish a book. He questioned Professor Lee about the characteristics of the Korean Traditional House meticulously and showed his deep interests with regards to the community life when he met the Priest Jeongrim in Gilsang Temple.

BYJ, to be discharged from hospital today..to finish schedule as planned including commemorative meeting for publication

[Hankook Daily]9/21/09

BYJ was hospitalized due to sepsis
Hankook Daily, original report posted on 9/21/09 06:31

Due to overexertion for preparing photoessay 'of Korea...'
To be discharged from hospital today… to finish schedule as planned including commemorative meeting for publication, etc.

'Hallyu star' BYJ is in a hospital.

According to BYJ's agency, BOF, BYJ was down from overexertion, and was admitted to a hospital in Kangnam, Seoul on the 17th. The agency said, "BYJ seemed to have overexerted himself with the publication of the book ahead of him. Because his blood sugar and blood pressure dropped very much, he went to the hospital."

Although there was a rumor that he had a new version of influenza regarding BYJ's hospitalization, it turned out that he had early symptoms of sepsis caused by overexertion, being different from the rumor.

Since he has been pouring his heart and blood into preparing the photoessay 'Travel left for exploring beauty of Korea-BYJ', which will go on sale on the 23rd, he became ill in the end. BYJ became very thin as he lost over 10-Kg of weight while writing this book.

A staff in his agency said, "He has been straining his nerves very much due to the publication of the book to the extent that he got ill. He seems to have fallen sick because his personality is such that he devotes himself more than 100% once he does a project. It is heartbreaking that he lost so much weight."

BYJ plans to finish his entire officially planned schedules regardless of his hospitalization. He will carry out a commemorative meeting for publication of 'Travel left to explore beauty of Korea' to be held at the National Central Museum in Yongsan Ku, Seoul on the 22nd, and schedules in Japan that begin on the 28th, without a snag. The agency said, "He himself has the strong will to get up (from a sickbed), shaking off a disease. His heart is to be on stage as he recovers by the 22nd."

BYJ decided to be discharged from the hospital before noon on the 21st. BYJ is considering taking a rest at his home from the 22nd until he leaves for Japan.

Yong Joon ssi ... Please Get Well Soon

Sept. 21, 2009

This poem was written by Joanne Fucks and I want to say this to you too.

Magic Wand

I wish I had a magic wand
To make it go away

I'd wave my scepter over you

Until you were okay.

I'd think good thoughts

I'd send you love

I'd transmit healing vibes
My wand and I would surely beat
What ever the Doctor prescribes.

But there's no magic scepter, so

I cannot cast a spell

Just know you're always in my thoughts

And I hope

You'll soon be well.

"Honey Baeb" Yong Joon ssi... Please be careful of your health.

Actor Bae Yong-joon hospitalized for illness

Korean Wave star Bae Yong-joon has been hospitalized for treatment of an illness believed to have been caused by extreme fatigue and stress, his management agency said Sunday, Yonhap reported.

Bae's agency, BOF, said the actor was admitted to a Seoul hospital Thursday after his blood pressure and blood sugar levels fell sharply. Test results showed that he was suffering from early stages of blood deterioration, the agency said.

Agency officials said the actor was not in serious condition and may be able to be discharged from the hospital this week in time for a scheduled publicity event.

"Bae has lost a lot of weight and appears to have grown weaker after working hard over the past year on a book that looks into the issue of Korean aesthetics," one agency official said.

Bae rose to stardom in neighboring Asian countries, including Japan, for his lead role in "Winter Sonata," a drama about star-crossed lovers in 2002.

Hallyu Star Bae Hospitalized

Korean top star Bae Yong-joon, 37, has been hospitalized to get treatment for blood poisoning, according to Bae's management agency Sunday.

"Bae was taken to a hospital in southern Seoul on Sept. 17 as he collapsed amid an abrupt fall in his blood sugar and blood pressure. The initial medical check proved that he was in the earlier stages of blood poisoning. He has become weaker in immunity due to overwork and stress," said the Boundaries of Forest (BOF).

"Bae seems to have gotten stressed about writing his book recently. He seems to have lost weight and is exhausted mentally as he has been consumed in writing his book for over one year," the agency said.

"There are no other problems. He is taking it easy, receiving Ringer's nutrient solution, at hospital."

Bae has lost more than 10kgs in weight during the past one year, while writing his photo essay, Journey Seeking Beauty of Korea, according to BOF

Bae is scheduled to hold a ceremony for the publishing of the book at the National Museum of Korea in central Seoul on Sept. 22. A similar event along with the one promoting the animation, Winter Sonata, is scheduled in Tokyo from Sept. 29 to 30.

"We believe that he will be able to leave the hospital by the publication day although we are worried a little," the agency said.

"He has gotten fatigued a lot due to a series of overnight work sessions to finish the publication. It seems that he really took it hard ahead of two big events in Seoul and Tokyo."

BYJ is hospitalized as he was down from overwork

[Yonhap News]9/20/09 16:18

BYJ is hospitalized as he was down with sepsis.

"His immunity had weakened due to overwork and stress"

It was known belatedly that top star BYJ was hospitalized due to sepsis.

BOF, BYJ's agency revealed on 20, "Mr. BYJ was admitted to a hospital in Kangnam on past 17, as he fell as blood sugar and blood pressure dropped suddenly," and "After examination, early stage of sepsis was diagnosed. The result was out that his immunity decreased due to overwork and stress."

Continuing on, saying that "It seems that BYJ 's nerves became very edgy while he wrote a book recently. He lost weight a lot and his body seemed to became very weak, as he wrote pouring his heart and blood (with great devotion)," (BOF) added that "There is no other abnormality, and he is currently taking rest getting IV solution (Ringer's solution.)."

BYJ became very much wasted as he lost weight over 10-lbs while writing 'Travel left to explore beauty of Korea', a photoessay informing Korea, for over one year.

He has commemorative meeting for publication in National Central Museum on 22 ahead of him, and he will attend promotion event for animation 'WLS' and commemorative meeting of publication of the book in Tokyo, Japan, on 29 and 30.

His agency told, "In addition to accumulation of exhaustion while he prepared the book, he lately worked staying up every day for finishing work. Also, he seems to become very sensitive with big event ahead of him in Korea and Japan one after another," and "Although we worry a lot as we have commemorative meeting for publication ahead of us on 22, it seems that he is able to be discharged prior to that."

BYJ, recipes for making 'Yonsama method' revealed grandly'

OSEN
9/20/09 10:59:37

BYJ made public his very own cooking recipes.

BYJ
introduced Kimchi recipes in 'Travel left to explore beauty of Korea-Bae Yongjoon' (will be abbrevated as 'HanAYeo'(Han-first word of Korea, A-first word of beauty, Yeo-first word of travel in Korean)), an essay he wrote after experiencing traditional culture.

BYJ decided home-made food and kimchi as his first journey during information gathering period over one year to author 'HanAYeo'. He personally tasted home-made food unique to those regions from Samcheong Dong, Seoul, Seoji Village in Kangreung, to Maesil (Japanese plum) Village in Kwangyang, and put the recipes he personally learned just as they were.

In particular, what attracts the attention is his own special kimchi recipe revealed on the based upon BYJ's experience of personally making kimchi along with Teacher Lee Hyojae. BYJ, emphasizing special benefit and history of kimchionce again, wrote with great care the course of making kimchi getting help from Teacher Lee Hyojae.

His own kimchirecipes BYJ revealed are exactly 'Kimchijeon(food like pancake using kimchi)' and 'Oisobagi(stuffed cucumber kimchi)', representative kimchi dishes every Korean like. Recipe for the Oisomagi is the recipe that BYJ's mother personally taught (BYJ). Recipes of his kimchijeon with squid and oisobagi he describes in the book is detailed to the extent that anyone can make delicious kimchijeon and oisobagi even one use them as they are.

. Along with kimchi, BYJ made public also a special recipes of home-made food he met in Samcheong Dong while describing moving feeling he felt from experience of Korean home-made food, the first journey for the 'HanAYeo'. The recipes he made public were 'Obangsaek Hanip Songpyeon(a kind of Korean rice cake in color)' and recipe to make 'Kalbi(short rib) stake'.

Two of them are both home-made food he met in SamghoengDong he visited by invitation, and are more special as those are recipes he obtained after asking earnestly to reveal their recipes, as he was attracted to the clean & neat taste made of natural seasoning and fresh material. BYJ, having extraordinary interest in globalization of Korean cuisine in ordinary times, confesses that he was moved as if he discovered direction to globalization of Korean cuisine from home-made food in Samchoeng Dong.

The 'HanAYeo' will be sold from September 23 in bookstores all over the country and domestic large-sized internet bookstores, beginning with commemorative meeting for publication on September 22.
